Ultrasonic study of liquid crystals (experimental)
Measure the ultrasonic velocity/attenuation as a function of temperature in a liquid crystal. This will be done in conjunction with Dr. Karl Saunders who is working on related theory. -Knowledge/skills: Phys 206/256, Phys 132
Ultrasonic study of superconductors (experimental)
Measure the ultrasonic velocity/attenuation as a function of temperature in a high-temperature superconducting material. As the temperature is lowered and the material goes through the superconducting transition the attenuation will change. The nature of this change is related to the superconducting mechanism. This will be done in conjunction with Dr. Chance Hoellwarth who will be measuring the electrical properties over the same temperature range. -Knowledge/skills: Phys 206/256, Phys 132
